U-M Library Career Progression Tool

The University of Michigan Library Publishing, the client, aimed to support individuals in careers interested in publishing by clarifying the skills needed for entry-level positions, advancement in the industry, and aligning current skill sets with suitable positions.

Client: Charles Watkinson, Associate University Librarian and Director of Publishing at the University of Michigan Press

Goal:  To build an interactive web app dashboard that allows individuals interested in publishing to understand which jobs they are best suited for and which skills they should develop to be more successful in their job search.

Roles: programming, data cleansing, ui/ux, testing specialist 

Tools: Tableau, GitHub, Python (Plotly Dash, Pandas), Figma, D3Blocks, Excel

Problem Statement

Lack of awareness regarding available career pathways and advancement opportunities in scholarly publishing. Difficult to advance positions and determine necessary skills for careers and career switches.

A user-friendly Plotly Dash dashboard using D3library visualizations, cleaned database, user feedback via videos + notes.

Competitive
Analysis

I conducted a competitive analysis of existing products some of which are McKinsey's Job Progression Tool, MyNextMove O*NET Interest Profiler, LinkedIn's Career Explorer.

Strengths

-McKinsey's Job Progression Tool supports job recommendations, career exploration.
-MyNextMove O*NET Interest Profiler supports job recommendations, skill matching, career exploration, and psychometric analysis.
-LinkedIn’s Career Explorer supports job recommendations, skill matching, has established reputation and user base.

Weaknesses
-It can be overwhelming for new users, with a lot of features and options that may be difficult to navigate
-Confusing terminology and jargon
-Finally, the current products do not show potential advancement career opportunities tailored specifically to the users and fail to create a personalized journey.

Result

The user flow highlights the different pathways a user can take when trying to navigate the dashboard. The dashboard employs a simple and straightforward navigation system that allows users to move effortlessly between different sections and features, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable user experience.
