Overcooked 2! Game Remake
Role: Product Manager & Game Designer
We believe that if we enhance communication tools for online multiplayers who use the PC/laptop to play (without a mic), it will increase engagement, improve coordination, and enhance player satisfaction, leading to more players returning to online play.
Methodology: Survey, Interviews, Play Testing
Solutions: 1) Improve In-Game Communication 2) Improve Tutorial & New Onboarding
Result: Online multiplayers on the PC/laptop could become more engaging, leading to higher satisfaction and higher retention. Attract solo players to play this game because of enhanced online communication tools
01
Why Should It Be Updated?
Overcooked 2! thrives on chaotic co-op gameplay, but its online multiplayer experience lags behind competitors.
Despite $48M in revenue and 6.4M users, many players described frustration with poor communication tools online. Without built-in voice chat or intuitive onboarding, online play feels isolating, especially for PC/laptop users without mics.
"I wouldn’t play this if I couldn’t talk to my partner, it feels less social.”

Methodology & Data Analysis
We combined market research with direct user feedback:
- Surveyed 21 Overcooked players of varying skill levels
- Conducted 8 in-depth interviews
- Compared local vs online play experiences
Key Findings
- 85% found the online tutorial confusing
- 75% repeatedly checked controls during gameplay
- 75% of online players wanted built-in voice chat
We found that players cared more about social connection than winning.
03
Findings
We identified two core UX pain points:
- Poor Onboarding: - 50% of gameplay time was wasted learning basic controls, with little guidance or tips provided.

- Weak Communication Tools: - 60% didn’t know emotes existed
- Emotes felt limited and unclear
- 75% of players wanted quick commands or built-in voice chat

“The emotes felt limited, I tried to communicate but couldn’t tell if she was receiving.”
04
Recommendations
To improve the online multiplayer experience, we proposed:
- Better Communication Tools - Built-in voice & video chat (like Fortnite)
- Speech-to-text for accessibility
- Preset quick commands like “Chop this” or “Pass the plate"

- Improved Onboarding - Add a tip/hint system to the tutorial
- Teach players how to effectively use emotes & commands early on

Impact → More engaged online players, stronger social connections, and higher retention, especially for solo or casual players.
